Battlefields Board Office

SHHS Excursion to France Battlefields

Bob Legace, Teacher at Sacred Heart High School Walkerton, Vice-Principal Laurie Fischer, and students Craig Klein, Rachel Grubb, Anna Lennox, and Nicole Strader,  shared their ‘amazing journey’ through pictures. Students then shared their personal reflections from the trip.

Prior to going on the trip, each student selected and researched a local veteran, who died in either World War I or World War II. This was Nicole’s favourite part. She chose her veteran randomly after visiting a local cenotaph. Nicole shared details of his life before the war, and his experiences as part of the 160th Bruce Battalion that fought in WWI. Standing next to the grave, near the site where he died, and learning the details of the battle, brought history to life for her.

Anna, a French Immersion student at SHHS, enjoyed the opportunity to use the French language first hand. Throughout the trip Anna acted as interpreter for the group. On one occasion, they met a man who spoke of his encounter with Canadian Soldiers on Juno Beach, and Anna able to translate for the group. Other highlights included a visit to a bomb disposal unit, a rare opportunity arranged by Historian Norm Christie, and an up close and personal visit to a cathedral in a small village that dated back to 1047.

Rachel was most impressed by the visit to the Vimy Ridge Museum. Students were able to go into the original trenches, and in the underground tunnels where the soldiers bunked. They were amazed by the actual crater holes from the battle, still preserved in remembrance, and the spectacular Vimy Ridge Memorial.

Craig shared some of their experiences as they visited the countless graves throughout the French countryside. He was most impressed by the “universality of treatment”. All soldiers, regardless of rank, were buried with the same headstone and equal treatment.

Bob Legace likened the experience more to a pilgrimage than an excursion. He noted that the group did not go as tourists, but rather to “take the words off the textbook and bring them to life for the students”. Bob shared his passion for history, and our students represented the board, and Canadians, proudly.

Welcome! We are glad that you are interested in travelling with us to France. This is an exciting opportunity for our school community. The following has been designed to ensure that you make a wise choice.
