Skills Canada 2017

Keaton Rich is 2nd in the Country!

Participating in Skills Canada is no small feat. In many competitions there are qualifiers to compete in local regions, near north region, just to qualify for the Ontario round and then you have to win the provincial competition to go to the Canadian round. Keaton Rich was able to make it to the Canadian round in Winnipeg for 2017 Skills competition. This does not happen without a lot of hard work. His skills journey all started in grade 10 where Keaton showed both talent and a keen interest in the machining trade learning the basics in machining. In grade 11 he started training for the skills competitions and achieved a second place at the Ontario round. This result gave him both confidence and a renewed effort for 2017 Skills competitions. His efforts were not the result of simply taking a course but rather effort placed outside of classes as he practiced and learned extended skills. Keaton has many natural talents. He is a mechanical thinker with good math and problem solving skills. These traits serve him well to accelerate his learning in this precision machining trade. Keaton’s hard work paid off with a silver in precision machining at the biggest skills event in Canada.

There are many people who effected his performance on the national level. It starts at home with great parents, Rob and Charlotte who honed Keaton’s good work ethic and supported his dreams. Keaton’s problem solving and math skills are honed by his teachers at Sacred Heart, true professionals who take the time to bring out a student’s talents for the future. The BGCDSB for supporting it’s students to explore their talents, whatever they may be. And of course God who loves us all and gives us both the courage and grace to become the best we can be.

In Keaton’s own words “what a ride!”
