Sacred Heart High School Celebrates State of the Art Facility

The launch of Sacred Heart High School’s new $1.8 million wing encompassing Arts, Manufacturing and a Multidisciplinary Innovation Centre signals the future in education with cutting edge technology and collaboration between disciplines, said Catherine Montreuil, former director of education with the Bruce Grey Catholic School Board and now an assistant deputy minister of education.

Students will be better prepared for post-secondary endeavours thanks to this hub of creative and technological learning, said Jamie McKinnon, the board’s director of education. Within the Interdisciplinary Innovation Space, Visual/Media Arts Area and expanded Manufacturing Technology lab, it has top of the line computers and state of-the-art machinery like a plasma cutter, computerized CNC machines, 3D printers, robotics, latest design software, mobile computing devices, welding booths, and more.

“Here is a space where we can bring the disciplines together and create a depth of knowledge and a way of knowing that helps these kids prepare for their future and not our past,” Montreuil said during the official opening ceremony of the school’s innovation and manufacturing centre Tuesday, June 14, 2016.

Students have been utilizing the space for most of the second semester but the official “chain cutting” ceremony and blessing exposed the state-of-the-art facility to the rest of the public. Renovations were also made to the wing’s Drama/Dance area, washrooms and the wing is directly behind the school’s science labs and chapel.

Guests at the event expressed support for the forward thinking of the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board, Sacred Heart High School and the partnerships enhanced with local businesses, trades, co-operative education supporters. Representatives included Lisa Thompson from the Province, Chris Peabody from the Municipality of Brockton, Dave Barrett OYAP, Board Personnel including Chairperson Bev Eckensweiller, Director Jamie McKinnon, local Trades people, business owners and more.

Students were actively involved in the opening prayer service and two student groups shared some of this semester’s experiences with a Multidisciplinary project supporting the United Nations Sustainable Global Goals project. http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/
Students from Sacred Heart’s Art, Religion, Civics/Careers, Physics and Manufacturing courses collaborated to find ways to improve our world based on the 17 Global Goals.
